Many people fall dead after a powerful blast that destroyed the Marriott Hotel in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad. At least forty people are killed in the bomb attack, which police suspected as suicide car bombing and warned the hotel could collapse. The fire is still flaming in some parts of the hotel. News said the explosion is caused by more than a tonne of explosives.
The bomb attack has happened in spite of the tight security in the surroundings area, where the hotel is located near the government buildings and diplomatic missions.
The new Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari said he would not allow Pakistan's territory to be violated by terrorists or foreign powers fighting them. He vowed in his first speech to MPs since he replaced Pervez Musharraf in August, to "root out terrorism and extremism wherever and whenever they may rear their ugly heads".
